I suggested Ronald Himler, feeling his style was just right for this story. Dorothy agreed with my feeling. When she contacted Ron Himler, he told her that yes, he’d like to illustrate my book – but he couldn’t do so for three years. Dorothy called me to ask if I wanted to wait or if I wanted her to find another illustrator.

We waited the three years.

When Dorothy received the sketch dummy from Ron, she sent me a photo-copy. The people, the clothes, the details were just right for 1940; everything was terrific -- except – the city he’d drawn wasn’t Chicago, it was New York.

I called Dorothy in distress and she told me to write a description and she would send it to Ron and he would make the corrections.

When Ron made the corrections, the illustrations were absolutely right.

Sara's City was published in 1995.
