Fast forward 17 years. In 1989 I had finished the manuscript of BEHOLD THE TREES and I was tired. However, my agent decided that more than rest, what I needed was to work on something else. She insisted that I take CITY THOUGHTS out of my file and re-work it into a picture book. (You need to understand that I ALWAYS did what my agent said to do – I trusted her that much) So I began. I recognized immediately that in order for it to be of a length and nature for a 32 page picture book, I had to have a framework. After about a month of thinking about it, I decided that taking one day in my girl’s life might work. Immediately, that eliminated over half of the original vignettes. At that point the only one that I was sure I was going to use was the following:
