From some notes I made about this change: "I discovered that feminine pronouns are more confusing that masculine ones! At one point I had a sentence that contained five'her's. So some re-working was called for that I hadn’t foreseen."




When I had re-worked the story, I sent it back to my editor. Neither she nor I was really happy with the name I’d chosen and I agreed to look for another name. I decided I needed a name with a softer sound. So I went looking through a couple of "baby naming" books…


Once I decided on "Phoebe" I could begin my final re-working of the story. What follows is the opening as it appears in the book.
