The Fourth Draft

When the story was sold to Little Brown and Company, the editor asked for some revision – which is a normal occurrence, and which, almost always, I’m willing and happy to do. The editor and I both want the best book that can come out of the material. The major change the editor requested was that I make my main character a girl instead of a boy; her feeling was that boys are often stereotypically pictured doing the kinds of chores that I had depicted in my story. I agreed to make the change and renamed my character "Amber."
