"Of course I re-write! Writing is re-writing!" That’s my response to the question that I am asked most often by teachers and students. What follows here is an example of the kind of evolution/revision that I go through with my books.

The very beginning of this story was written on the back of a 9 X 12 envelope that I’d received in the mail. At that point, I knew the story I wanted to tell, but I didn’t know the name of my character.
