Though you can’t see the whole building, it has six apartments. The apartment that you can see on the first floor was where we lived; the window over the front door is the landing between the first and second floors.

I spent a lot of time on the landing, playing games that I made up. Sometimes, the girl who lived in an apartment on the second floor came down to the landing to play with me.

One of my favorite games was "Newspaper Office."

My growing up years – from age five-and-a-half through young adulthood - were spent in Chicago, Illinois though I was born in Tucson, Arizona. Many of my books have as their base memories from my growing up years.

My friends and I played hide-and-seek around the bushes many afternoons after school. The rule my parents laid down was: when the streetlights go on – it’s time to go inside.
